The dark and the light

With the Winter Solstice coming this week on December 22, my thoughts turn to celebrating the longest night of the year and the return of the light. We will be feasting and reflecting about the past year and expressing our hopes and dreams for 2012.

For the feast part, the theme is dark and light foods, of course. So here’s what I’m thinking:

  • Appetizers: white Tokyo salad turnips (light) with a balsamic/olive oil dipping sauce (dark); slivered almonds (light)
  • Main: pasta (light) with kale ribbons (dark), shiitake mushrooms (light/dark), fresh mozzarella (light), and a sprinkling of parmesan (light)
  • Bread: homemade (light)
  • Dessert: maybe something chocolaty (dark); dried white Turkish figs (light)
  • Drinks: red and white wine (dark/light); coffee (dark) with milk (lightish) 🙂
